The music industry is in great transition right now.Technology has opened up a whole new world of choices to the public in accessing music.Though the days of cd’s are still with us, the age of the download is upon us and growing at a staggering rate.Artists are still trying to sign record deals and obtain radio airplay but the internet has opened up the entire world as the potential audience for the artist and the artist can go straight to that audience via the artist’s website, myspace, twitter ,facebook, blogs, etc… However, one thing in the music business that hasn’t changed at the same rate as music’s accessibility is the cost to the artist.If the artist has a record deal much of the costs, at least the recording costs, are fronted by the label and the artist pays that backthrough record sales first before the artist sees any profit for himself.This is what is known as a recoupable expense by the record label.The record label may or may not be involved in other areas of the artists’ career such as touring and again, any upfront money spent by the label is first recouped by the label before the artist or act sees anything.Though recoupment costs may be reduced if the artist does not have a record label, it then means those large upfront costs for recording as well as all of the other needs related to the artists’ career fall on the artist with upfront being the kicker.
